Coercion 7 The Green Eye of the Yellow God For Spike the day passed slowly.
He tidied away the bed and watched the grainy TV. He drank the last of his blood
and finished his novel. The day was broken up by a visit from Xander’s mother.
As usual, the woman was a bit tipsy, swaying her hips at him as she loaded the
washer. She reminded Spike that his
rent was due soon (even though it wasn’t) and swayed back upstairs. When she
didn’t come back after the laundry after four hours, he tossed it in the dryer
so he wouldn’t have to smell sour clothing again. A couple of hours before
dark, Spike opened up the sofa bed again, laying down and breathing deep of
Xander’s scent. He left it open and mussed so Xander wouldn’t think he was a
house maid. An hour after dark, Spike went
patrolling. The gang of vamps he ran into in Shady Rest never had a chance. He
played and kicked and clawed the five of them to dust, then stood panting. Hands slapping together slowly
caused him to whirl and pick out the shape of the Slayer sitting on a tombstone,
applauding. “That was a good show, Spike. What’s got you all frustrated?” Spike couldn’t help it. He was
up in Buffy’s face in a heartbeat. “I was just having some fun, Slayer.” “Looks to me like you got
issues. Cause you can’t hurt people?” Buffy grinned into his snarl. “Fuck off, Slayer.” “Maybe that’s his
problem.” Riley joined Buffy. “He’s not getting any.” They both laughed,
and Spike took off rather than nurse a migraine. As hard as he tried, he
couldn’t find any more fights to pick. Two hours before dawn he went by the
market that catered to his kind and bought some blood. He splurged on a bag
human, as well as pig’s blood to take back. As he drained the bag, all he
could think about was how sweet Xander’s blood would be. +++ Xander finally returned to his
basement at four the next day. He was happy, tired, and a touch sunburned. “Where have you been?” Spike
growled, as Xander dumped an armful of cheap stuffed animals on the bed. “At the pier. Willow’s
cousin from Tennessee was in town, so I stayed over there. We watched bad movies
all night. And talked. Today we went to the pier. Vicky is cute and sweet.
She’s like a… riper Willow.” Xander giggled. “So did you snog her?” Spike
asked bitterly. Xander froze at the heat in Spike’s voice. “Yeah. We kissed a little. On
the Farris wheel. What’s it to you?” Spike could smell the day of
arousal and an unfamiliar perfume on the boy. “Just wondering. Don’t matter
to me.” Spike grabbed up a book and devoted his entire attention to it. Some of the pleasure from his
twenty-four hours of being appreciated as a dateable heterosexual boy faded.
“Well, she lives so far away, and she’s headed home tonight. I’ll probably
never see her again.” Spike just grunted. Xander
fished among the stuffed animals and came up with a little toy. He held it out
to Spike. “I… I um, won this for you. It took three tries at the ball
toss, but I had to get it.” Spike grunted again. “Look, Spike, you
can go off and vanish for a night and I don’t say anything. This is my place,
and you don’t keep me.” Xander threw the prize so it bounced off Spike’s
chest and landed in his lap. “And you forgot my blood.” Xander grabbed up a change of clothes and fled upstairs to the shower. Spike closed his eyes and listened to the boy’s angry muttering. It had been the happiest he’d seen Xander since he’d moved in. Why did he spoil it? Spike looked down and picked up what had been thrown at him. A little brown bat smirked up at him with felt fangs. The boy had been thinking about him, even as he was out with his date. It should be a victory, but it felt like a failure. He let the book drop and held the cheap little bat with both hands. Where had this game gone wrong? Upstairs, the shower cut off, and shortly the front door opened and closed. The boy had gone out again. |
