Fanbot's
Autograph Collection
I have been collecting autographs for many
years, but it wasn't until several years ago I realized just how many I have and set
out to catalog them. In the '80's and early '90's, autographs were a part of the
admission price. One could hear a person speak, then get an autograph on your
own item or buy a picture for $5.00. Today, unfortunately, one has to pay $10.00
to $30.00 to get an autograph in person at many conventions. James Marsters is
one I didn't mind paying $20.00 each for AT ALL.
Musicians, Authors, and Artists are normally
happy to sign anything of theirs for free.
I would rather get a signature in person than
buy one or happen upon it. My favorite experiences are; Ray Bradbury (I couldn't
speak I was so overwhelmed), Laurie Anderson (Love her!), Leon Redbone (An early
autograph. Great concert), Weird Al (Signed autographs for a 2 block long line
of people after a wonderful sold-out concert), James Marsters (SIGH), Bruce
Campbell (A double autograph. Nice guy), Frank Capra (Very old at the time. An
early autograph for me), Anne Rice (Long line, but nice lady), and that
wonderful CanCat in 1999 with Neil Gaiman, Charles Vess, and Lisa Snellings.
I don't buy autographs just to have them
unless I happen upon them cheap or free. There are more signed items around than
you may think.
If you like signed books, keep your eyes open
at book warehouses and bargain tables. Watch for "signed copy"
stickers. Sometimes authors will send out dumps of books with one or two signed
copies included.
Another great place to look is Abebooks. www.abebooks.com.
I have bought two signed books there after learning of the unfortunate deaths of
Edward Gorey and Douglas Adams.
