Chapter 6

Into Heaven

The movie had ended and another one started when Buffy woke up, gasping and fighting again. Spike was expecting this and blocked a blow. He waited until she had calmed a bit and said, “I didn’t know you hated John Wayne so much.”

“What?” Buffy looked round, confused, and finally focused on the silent TV glowing in the dark room. She flopped back down beside him. “You know, sleeping’s hard, but… just because of the whole waking-up-in-a-box thing. So maybe waking up’s the problem, you know. But just for a second. I sleep okay. Great, even. Except, you know, for the dreams…”[i]

“That would be hard to overcome,” Spike agreed, “but you have to sleep.”

Buffy stood up and stretched. “I know.”

“I’ll just kip on the couch, shall I?” Spike put in.

Buffy stopped half way up the stairs and looked down at him thoughtfully. “No, come up with me.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” She led him upstairs.

Buffy came out of the bathroom in her pajamas to find Spike in the chair by the window, dressed again in the castoffs. She slipped under the covers and smiled over at him, picking up the edge of the blanket. “You may as well be comfortable.”

A smile of wonderment blooms on his face. “I never thought I’d be invited into heaven.”

“You’re on probation, mister. Behave yourself.” They settled in together. For a long time they just lay close and gazed into each other’s eyes, not saying anything, Buffy drawing random patterns on the soft skin on the back of Spike's hand.  Neighborhood night sounds drifted in the open window and a radio played in Dawn’s room, just quiet enough they could not make out the tune.

Buffy shifted and laid her head on his still chest. “Did I hear you singing to me at some point?”

“Well, maybe.”

“Sing it to me again.”

“It’s a song my mum would sing to me as she held me.

Early one morning, just as the sun was shining

I heard a maid sing in the valley down below…”

Buffy was soon in a deep sleep held safely in his strong arms. Spike thought the moment he first saw her alive was the happiest of his existence, but he was wrong. This night was.
